Change Your Cost Basis Election

Cost basis is the price you paid to acquire shares, including any shares you acquire by reinvesting dividends and capital gains. When shares are sold, the gain or loss on your investment is the difference between the cost basis of the shares sold and the sales price.

By default, Heartland Funds calculates shareholders’ cost basis using the average cost method. This involves averaging the cost of all purchases made after January 1, 2012, and shares are redeemed in a first in, first out order.

Overview

Average cost   Averages the cost per share of each share owned
First in, first out   The first shares purchased in an account are the first shares sold
Last in, first out   The last shares purchased in an account are the first shares sold
High cost, first out   The shares with the highest purchase price are the first shares sold
Low cost, first out   The shares with the lowest purchase price are the first shares sold
Loss gain utilization   Short-term (owned less than one year) covered shares yielding a loss are sold before long-term (owned more than one year) covered shares yielding a loss; once all covered shares with losses are sold, long-term covered shares yielding gains are sold before shares yielding a short-term gain
Specific share class identification   Covered shares are sold in any order you specify; you may designate a secondary method to be used in the event specific shares have not been identified or designated shares are unavailable (secondary method options include first in, first out; last in, first out; low cost; high cost; or loss/gain utilization)
